Madness, And A Bit of Hope

(with a nod to Safiya Henderson-Holmes, whose work I much enjoyed in another lifetime)

An article in the New York Times today gave me reason to cheer. With all the craziness of astronomical fuel prices and food shortages in the air, it's heartening to see that community/urban gardening is starting to show some legs. It may not be the complete answer to the food crisis, but it's a positive piece of the puzzle.

Happy Wednesday!

Sanlucar Recollections, Part I

If Flamenco is the soul of traditional Andalucia, and bullfighting its heart then, undoubtedly, manzanilla sherry is the blood that courses through its veins. And if you've never had manzanilla from the barrel, you've never REALLY had manzanilla. That's why, even after more than three months have passed, I feel compelled to write about our visit to manzanilla country, or rather city: Sanlucar de Barrameda.

Unfiltered manzanilla
Flor in your wine?

Alright, already!

If you haven't been following the haps over at Wet Laundry, you've probably wondered where I've fallen off to. Many thanks to Jeff for keeping the flame going strong. (Please, no protests! We want a free Tibet, too!) I'm not going to bore you with excuses, but rather intrigue you with hints of upcoming posts and happenings.

Tapas For Chanukah

Bar Manolo was the place we happened upon our first full day in Sevilla, and the site of our first tapas. Having had a few more tapas elsewhere, and after doing a little reading, we realized that it was actually a kick-butt place for an afternoon tapeo, and returned yesterday for another helping. Seeing as how it was Chanukah, we ordered mostly fried things.

Mañana...

I seem to have adopted the Spanish standby — mañana — as my m.o. for this blog already! I keep starting posts and saying to myself, "eh, I'll finish it tomorrow..." So far, no good!

In part, it's because we're really just settling in, and in part, because our budget isn't allowing for extravagant tapeos through town yet. In short, I'm low on material! (The blogger's quintessential dilemma.)

Here are a few of the wines we've had at home recently, with some quick impressions. Hopefully, I'll have something more substantive soon. It won't be mañana, though, since it's our first Spanish holiday, and we'll be taking a day-trip to some Roman ruins.

Happy Turkey Day, From Spain!

Greetings from beyond the pond, Drink Eat Lovers! After an arduous and eventful journey, Amberly & I are finally in Sevilla, land of el tapeo y la siesta (eating tapas and taking naps), slowly adjusting to things here. Our budget prohibits us from eating out every meal, but suffice it to say that we have had our share of both of the above.

Highlights of our European journey so far include bonafide pub fish & chips and organic red ale in Bristol, a Favada Asturiana (bean stew with all sorts of charcuterie) in Madrid, and a good variety of fixed price menús (3 courses, bread, wine) in addition to tapas in Seville.

Nothing, or Too Much to Report

As you may have surmised, this author has been a bit too distracted by living his life as it is to write about it. We are less than a week away from the end of our roadtrip, at which time I PROMISE(!!!) I will write about one or more of the following topics:

• My favorite DTW foods
• Great food in a small midwestern town
• A Wine 101 practicum (wine primer entry)
• More bad road food (or maybe not)
• BarBcutie (or how my wife got her internet handle)
• and much, much more.

So, hang tight, fellow Drink Eat Lovers. We'll talk soon.

Roadfood Roundup

Ten days into our road trip finds us in Minneapolis. Along the way, we have been trying to be frugal about our eating habits, pulling from our store of Trader Joe's supplies of granola, milk & fruit for breakfast, PB&J or tuna wraps for lunch, and various pasta-based concoctions for dinner. We have eaten "out" some, including greasy hashbrowns and watery coffee in Chamberlain, South Dakota and salt- (and flavor-) free mashed potatoes with lukewarm gravy in Austin, Nevada.

There have been a couple of highlights I thought I'd mention — in very rough, road-writing form!

Road Trippin'

A hole to the sky, originally uploaded by Amberly & David.

Our first week of travel has been harried but beautiful. There are more pictures at our Flickr site, and more travel stories at El Camino Viejo, my travel blog. I will post soon about some of our food experiences along the way... Stay tuned!

Welcome, New Readers & Old

In our six months of operation, we have been getting a steadily increasing readership, and I want to say welcome and provide a little roadmap.

As you can tell from our About page, this is a collaborative blog by Jeff and me. Jeff is studying for his MS, and has been posting quite a bit about that, and I'm in the process of moving to Spain with my wife, Amberly. Posts from me might be less frequent as we are getting ready to go, and in transition, but here are some of my favorites, for you to get caught up on:

Snack Break
Old Books, Wine Trends
Wine For Your Ears
And a continuing Wine Primer, to which I need to add installments.

These may not be your favorites, so take a look around, write a comment, and keep in touch!
