After a very brief trip to Piemonte and Toscana, my Italian trip ended with fifteen hours in the Eternal City. We arrived around 5:00 PM on Friday night at a very nice boutique hotel near the Forum, Hotel 47. Though I only slept for four hours and took one shower, I would highly recommend the hotel. The concierge was fantastic at setting up our transfer to the airport and the espresso was great!
One of my favorite sites in all of Rome is the Pantheon and we hiked up the Via del Corso, which was still strewn with beautiful holiday lights. After our visit to the Pantheon we went to one of the best coffee shops in Rome, Sant'Eustachio il Caffe.
The key to this espresso is that the barista puts a sugar cube in the cup prior to drawing the espresso...and the crema is so thick you have to eat it with a spoon!
As the tour guide I decided that I would show the group where I proposed to Shauna in 2006. I did not really think about a specific place to propose to Shauna but after a long dinner we walked by this pretty piazza near the parliament building and she said yes...after laughing at me.
After paying homage to this important site, it was time for dinner. We had made reservations at a famous fish restaurant and needed to catch a taxi. This is where it became tricky as the taxis were on strike! Our host called the restaurant to see if they could send a car but we were a group of 8 and they did not have a car large enough. So we decided to regroup and search for a new place. We looked on Yelp, Trip Adviser, and many other sources on our phones but I remembered one of the best meals I had in Rome was in Trastevere at Enoteca Ferrara. Since there were no taxis, we walked about a mile and found this waiting for us:
The moment the group walked through the doors and happened upon a mountain of meat and cheese we were all in heaven. The meal was good, the wine flowed and when I asked the server to bring me an amaro to cap off the evening...she brought my favorite amaro that I have ONLY found in Puglia.
