As the Olympics have raged on for the past week, I took it upon myself to begin an Olympic wine tasting marathon. Since last Thursday I have tasted 64 wines, 6 cocktails and 4 beers. The wines I all spit out but the others helped "clean" my palate. For this week's "Monday Night Wines" I wanted to share with you what I have tried. I have used a star rating for each entry. No stars means it was gross, 1 star good for the money, 2 stars it is a good wine, and 3 stars you should rush out and find it. So, are you ready?

This past weekend Shauna and I headed up to Lake Shasta for a house boating weekend with our friends. This was our first time house boating and we look forward to next year. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on a cool blue lake with an ice cold beer in your hand. That said this week's Monday Night wine is devoted to the beer that helped make our weekend so much fun.

So this week Shauna and I tasted two bottles on wine on Monday night. The first wine was a Soave from Remo Farina and was totally boring. Unsatisfied we opened a Pinot Noir from Alma Rosa Vineyards of Santa Barbara. We enjoyed this wine and that is what I was going to write about, but last night I had dinner at a great local restaurant, NOPA, and had a wine that was great!

If you have ever hung out with a wine geek you will hear words like dirt, leather, mineral, wet rocks, crushed gravel, chalk or any number of things that at first glance don't sound so yummy. One word that will always come up with a cork dork is terroir. Terroir a French word that has no direct English translation, but is most commonly translated to "sense of place". This simple phrase does not do the term justice but it is a start.
