We discovered the rustico the same day we discovered we were out of clean underwear. Going to the Laundromat at home is a chore, in Italy it’s a cultural adventure. If you ever want to feel a sense of accomplishment, do laundry in a foreign country.
While waiting for the cycle to end, we got hungry. The owner of the Laundromat recommend a place nearby, the name or direction of which, we later admitted to each other, neither of us really understood. We wandered around for a bit, ending up at random-looking nondescript bakery.
We both selected the rustico – it looked good, and more importantly, filling. We made a good choice. A warm, delicious choice.
The rustico is a cheese filled puff pastry, but it’s more than that. The puff pastry is flaky and light, oily and buttery at the same time. And it’s filled with tomatoes and the creamiest mozzerella I have ever had. It’s absolutely delicious.
