Valentine’s Day is a day that I don’t pay much attention to. When I was in middle school and had my first girlfriend I did but now Shauna and I are more concerned about what is happening on Lost and who the next survivor of Oceanic Flight 815 is. It is not that I don’t want to express my love to my wife or how much better my life is with her but it is the fact that there is a whole ad campaign telling me that my love wants the diamond circle necklace or roses or chocolate. I guess I just don’t like being told what to do…
Drink Eat Love is about shared experiences, the lust for life and making sure we can take time to drink in what is around us. Even though Valentine’s Day has passed I want to make sure I continue to realize and appreciate those shared experiences. Here are the experiences that I had this week that are making me all sentimental as I write this.
- My “man date” with Thomas on Tuesday night. Thomas is one of my best friends and it had been a while since we had just enjoyed each other’s company and did not talk about work. It was great, I made lasagna and salad and we enjoyed a 2004 Nigel Grüner Veltliner, a 1996 Marchese di Barolo, Barolo (AMAZING, 1996 is such a great vintage for Barolo and Barbaresco, FIND SOME!), and then ended our dinner with a glass each of Clos Uroulat Jurançon, an obscure appellation in southwest France that produces beautiful dessert wine.
- Golden State Warriors Game versus the Phoenix Suns. 120–118 W for the Warriors! One of the best games I have ever seen.
- Valentine’s Day Night with my wife. I made Coq au Vin and had a lovely bottle of Vincent Giradin Cotes du Beaune Village 2004 (good vintage to look for, not for power or depth like 2005 but really tasty) and then an AMAZING episode of Lost!
- A great meal with new friends! Our host made a Cioppino that may have been th best soup I have ever had! I will get the recipe and post it. We shared 6 bottles that night along with some 10 year old Laphroaig Scotch and played Rock Band until the wee hours. So forgive me if I cannot remember the wines.
- I had a blind tasting with a pal and tried some great wines: Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Riesling 2006, Chateau de Céron, “Grand Enclos” Graves Sec (White Bordeaux) 2004, Télégramme, Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2005 (AWESOME but needs time). Then Shauna and I made a Greek Feast for my cousins: Roasted Lamb with mint yogurt sauce, roasted beets, and roasted garbanzo beans with dandelion greens and finally an Apricot rice pudding. We had a 1990 Vouvray, a 1997 Aliganico del Vulture and the Clos Uroulat Jurançon.
- To end the week, Shauna and I had a lovely day of walking around San Francisco, a cappuccino at Blue Bottle, bought a burr grinder at Crate and Barrel, saw “There Will Be Blood” (I liked it a lot) and capped our day off with dinner at Pizzeria Delfina with two great friends and 4 bottle of wine.
There you have it, a great week of Drinking, Eating, and Loving every minute of it! If you want to listen to what inspired this rant, please go to: All Song’s Considered: Music to Fall in Love With

ps— one of these days I'll get around to posting about my Sherry experiences. We're kinda wrapped up in our seemingly never-ending housing search!
