A warm spell in San Francisco is to be treasured. While they can be otherwise torturous during the work week, they make for the best snack breaks, especially when you live close to the Bi Rite Creamery. The Creamery opened last year in a gauntlet-throwing move to contest Mitchell's Ice Cream, for a while now the only (real) game in town.
Ice cream in San Francisco is a tricky proposition. Your best sales months are socked in fog and whipped by cold winds. There is no such thing as lingering over a cone or a shake into a languid evening here, except for two or three weeks out of the year. Four, maybe, thanks to global warming. In order to thrive in the ice cream business, you have got to be so good that people are willing to stand in line on the gustiest and foggiest of summer afternoons. But today - a decidedly non-gusty or foggy spring marvel that had Dolores Park dotted with folk - was a perfect ice cream day.
