Amberly & I were sitting in Pizzetta last month, drinking a Charles Joguet Chinon over some of the finest locally-sourced thin-crust this side of the Mississippi, when George Harrison started singing "My Sweet Love" on the stereo. In a Proustian moment, it all came together for me.
It was clear to me, these are the three things that make me the happiest in life: honest wine, sustainable food, and love - both my wife's kind and George's. The first two roll off the tongue so easily they're a cliche. And almost anything you can say about love is cliche, so you could think, "helluva way to start off there, pardner," and I wouldn't blame you. But bear with me. You see, love is the clincher here, the glue that makes it stick, the bow you tie around the package to make it one. Love is what keeps Charles Joguet from selling out and cynically making Mondovino, to borrow a phrase from Jonathan Nossiter. It's also what makes Pizzetta source all their food locally and sustainably.
I could go on in ways that would seem corny or new-agey or otherwise disagreeable, but I'll only say one more thing. Jeff & I started this blog because this is how we bonded: wine & food. We call it Drink Eat Love, because those things are all dear to us. And because Chinon, Pizzetta, and George was a bit oblique and possibly rights-infringing.
A note about me & my tastes. Everybody has a range of tastes. Mine extends from middle-brow to out-of-my-league high-brow. For example, I did read the first half of the first book in Proust's "In Search of Lost Time," so I do come by that reference honestly. This is not always the case, however, and I invite you to call me on my bullshit! Because there will inevitably be some. And if you want to talk Proust, meet Amberly, my lovely wife. But enough about French intellectuals, this blog is about wine!
